Popular Neighborhoods for UHM Students

As a student at the University of Hawai'i, choosing where to live can be an exciting yet daunting task. The good news is that within Honolulu, there are many neighborhoods from which students can choose, each with its own unique charm and benefits. Below are just a few popular neighborhoods to consider when looking for off-campus housing in Honolulu.

Mānoa-Makiki: Nestled in a beautiful valley, Mānoa-Makiki is the closest option to the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa campus.  Beautiful Mānoa is known as a historic valley, and one of the most highly sought after neighborhoods on O’ahu.  Makiki is often a more affordable option for students, while not sacrificing proximity to the university.  Both offer private residential areas and proximity to commercial areas.

Waikīkī (Waikiki): Known for its liveliness as our tourist district, Waikīkī offers a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. With its beautiful beaches, abundant shopping, and dining options, Waikīkī is a popular choice for students who want to experience the excitement of living in a world-renowned tourist destination. Although it is further from campus, with planning Waikīkī is still accessible by public transportation.

Kaimuki: A charming family-oriented neighborhood, Kaimuki is located just a few miles east of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. This neighborhood is known for its tree-lined streets and local boutiques, as well as its diverse dining options. Kaimuki offers a quieter, more residential feel while still being close to campus.

Downtown/Kaka'ako: Located in our urban business district, Downtown/Kaka'ako is close to the Hawai’i State Legislature and our JABSOM campus. This neighborhood offers a mix of residential and commercial areas, with a variety of dining and shopping options. It is a popular choice for students who want to experience the excitement of urban style living while still being within close proximity to campus.
