Beyond Honolulu

When it comes to finding off-campus housing, students may find that living outside of Honolulu can offer more affordable options. The Windward Coast (East Side) and Central O'ahu are two areas that may be  worth considering.

The Windward Coast is located on the eastern side of the island and is known for its breathtaking beaches and lush landscapes. Some popular neighborhoods in this area include Kailua and Kāneʻohe. Kailua is a trendy town with a laid-back atmosphere, and its proximity to Kailua Beach Park makes it a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts. Kāneʻohe is a residential town with plenty of shopping and dining options.

Central O'ahu is another area worth exploring for students looking for more affordable housing options. Some neighborhoods in this area include Mililani and Ewa Beach. Mililani is a master-planned community that offers a variety of housing options, from single-family homes to apartments. Ewa Beach is a beachfront community that is popular with families and offers a more laid-back lifestyle.

Living outside of Honolulu may offer more affordable housing options, but it's important to consider the commute to campus and the availability of parking. The commute from areas like Windward Coast or Central O'ahu can be longer and more challenging during rush hour, which typically occurs from 6-7 am and 3-6 pm. Parking on the UH Manoa is also limited with preference given to students based on their assigned registration priority which closely mirrors their class standing (graduate students, then seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshman). Gas prices should also be considered, as they tend to run higher than the national average in Hawai'i.  While living outside of Honolulu may be more affordable, it's important to weigh the potential challenges and expenses of commuting to campus before making a decision.
